When the .NET universal top-level domain name extension was first launched in 1985, together with the first domains on the Internet, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure companies. Considering that there were no special restrictions about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, dot NET domains were acquired and used for different purposes and by a large number of people. This domain extension is a great alternative to .COM, particularly if the wanted domain with the latter domain extension is not free for registration.
