SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol employed to connect to a server and execute various tasks through a command line. The protocol is used by many knowledgeable users, due to the fact that the info transmitted over it is encrypted, so it cannot be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access may be used for lots of things based on the type of website hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for example, SSH is one of several ways to import/export a database or to upload a file in case the web server permits it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH could be used for virtually everything - you can install software or restart certain services including the web server or the database server which run on the machine. SSH is employed mainly with UNIX-like Platforms, but there are clients that allow you to use the protocol if your PC is using a different OS too. The connection is made on TCP port 22 by default and the remote web server always listens for incoming connections on that port although a lot of service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Shared Website Hosting

SSH access is offered with all shared website hosting plans we offer you. With some of them, it's offered by default, while with others it's an additional upgrade which you can include with a few mouse clicks in your web hosting CP. You could get SSH access through the section related to it in which you will also find the info you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You could choose the password which you'll use and, if necessary, you'll be able to change it with a few mouse clicks from the same place. All commands that may be used with our shared plans are listed within a help article together with relevant instances. If the SSH access function is permitted for your account, you'll also be able to upload files using your preferred FTP client via an SFTP connection.
